No, rnga and lag-na are Tibetan terms for frame drums, and dhyangro is a Nepali
word often used to describe the Tibetan drum. The drumheads of frame drums have
a greater width than depth.
20 years ago I visited a small monastery near the
tombs of the Tibetan kings on the Muchong Hill opposite to the Yarlung River.
An old monk was playing the lag-na and cantillating out of ancient scriptures. Thoughts
of Bön and shamanism crossed my mind.
On my recent visit I could see someone painting the
drum, the drums being played at various monasteries in a sacral context by
monks as well as being played by laymen. The drum has a deep sound.
