The Old Tea Horse Road (茶马古道) had been a trade road like the Silk Road, much shorter, but still long
enough and a network rather than a single road. The name comes from the horses
on which tea has been transported to Tibet, especially to Lhasa. The tea had
been pressed into bricks, which were then covered and put on the horses. The
roads and paths were winding through the valleys and mountains of Sichuan,
Yunnan and Tibet.
The small kiosk for handmade souvenirs has taken the name of the road
and might prospering in the future as lots of inland tourists will pass this
roadside house. The Sichuan-Tibet Railway (川藏铁路) will also take this route, but I guess for our kiosk
it won’t have much impact. The kiosk sells handmade objects like containers and
bowls. In the name of the kiosk you find: 民间手工艺, which means folk handicraft. The bust of Mao Zedong
(毛泽东) might be a remnant of other
times.
