Camel‘s Hair Abas from Iran

The aba is a cleric's cloak; it is woven with camel’s hair at a workshop, which is a bit like a cellar. You can’t find much on the internet. I’ve seen such a shuttle loom about 15 years ago in a small town. The loom had been set into the cellar. Now (2018) I’ve seen a loom in a small museum. It is difficult to spin camel’s hair, which is usually done by women. The yarn then is used by the male weavers. For an aba you need 2-3 kg of camel’s hair. The hair of one year of camels is the finest. The camels are shorn in early spring and you get 500 g from each camel. The aba is a loose outer garment without buttons or a belt.
