Again I
had the good luck to see the cranes migrating. The bulk of the cranes would be
seen in Germany at the end of October, this year in the best of sunshine, until
mid of November. I’ve seen them on the 17th and 18th of November.
Cranes
start from their gathering places in the early morning. They fly at a speed of
about 80 km/h. There is a western route where I have seen cranes both in
Meerbusch (Lower Rhine), where they cross the Rhine and go to the Eifel, where
I’ve seen them in Diefenbach (Kall). From here they go to their wintering
places in Spain and Portugal via the French Champagne (Lac du Chantecoq). All
in all 350,000 cranes take this way (and slightly differing routes) to the
south. The bulk should have gone by now, but it’s always a great wonder to see.
