Two days
ago I had been to the Eifel and was able to see the cranes migrating. The end
of October is the best time in Germany for having a chance to see these birds.
There might be still coming cranes until December.
Cranes
start from their gathering places in the early morning. They fly at a speed of
about 80 km/h – with the wind coming from the North it seemed they were flying
at an even higher speed. There is a Western route where I have seen cranes both
in Meerbusch (Lower Rhine), where the cranes cross the Rhine and go to the
Eifel, where I’ve seen them in Diefenbach (Kall). From here they go to their
wintering places in Spain and Portugal via the French Champagne (Lac du
Chantecoq). All in all 350,000 cranes take this way (and slightly differing
routes) to the South.
They
flew directly above my house and a small group has been flying at a lower
altitude and tried to get a thermic uplift above my brother’s house, which is
next to mine.
