Morning at Beagle Canal

Tranquil morning at the canal
Wind, gust and breeze have ceased

The water lies dark and oily
No ripples, no boat, no rain

An Alaska goose seems to moor
No paddling, no ripples, no movement

But some birds sing into the morning
And flowers open to spread perfume

All serenity will be gone soon
As day proceeds and wind returns

Summer storm
After wind and rain
Still dropping

ASAHI HAIKUIST NETWORK/ David McMurray published one of my haiku yesterday:

Sun on the sidewalk
Heading for parasol’s shade
Auntie’s swollen legs

Rhine

River running and rolling
Then slackened and stagnant
Barks bowing to billows

Olive water and withered willows
Boys playing on barren banks
Black smoke blown from barbecues

Mists moving though mornings
Icy mud clings to the mooring
The cranes cross in large crowds

Winter mollies the waterfront
White blanket melts despite the whiff
Rivulet murmurs into the Rhine

Spring returns with snowmelt
River sloshes around and across the slopes
First buds opening for the busy bees

Oh, join me for a journey
Along the towpaths and through towns
Through all seasons with sober mirth

"Look, what is best”

We might walk around the city
And do some window shopping
So occupied, what a pity
Suddenly it’s eye-popping

We get closer to the window
Have to shade our eyes with both hands
But the shop keeper reprimands
Even the black dressed widow

Does he know we just want to look?
Or is he more some kind of schnook?
Someone prone to decrepity

Then his face is full of laughter
Recalling mother and daughter
And so woke serendipity

Can’t hide
In the dust
The wind

The Mainichi Japan has published this Haiku  today:

After the thunder
The street is darker
And still empty

Icy Peak

Above the tree line
Ice has carved the granite

We trek along
Through fir woods
Tall and serene
And the wet ground
Speckled with low pines

Snow has covered the rock
We cross a fox trail
Heavily breathing pristine air

Then we reach the ridge
And walking gets easier

The sun glares brightly at us
While the wind is cold and fierce
We’re still putting step after step

We reach the summit, eventually
Enjoy the sight and moment
Exhaustion’s still an alien concept

But as it is past noon
We have to leave

And in between the fir trees
Wind howls and night and cold
Are grabbing our souls

But we still have _miles to go before_
We can lay down to rest and sleep

No nightmare will pester us
As in our dreams we still shall look
From standing on the icy peak

Blue Sky

Is it the blue sky
So high above
That elevates my spirits?

Or the songs
The birds are singing
Under the blue sky?

Or rather tree and bushes
And the blooming meadow?

The golden field?

Maybe it’s all of nature
Gathered under the blue sky
And the soft wind
… whispering

In Days of Yore

In the open mead the barley lies golden
And white clouds are passing by above
The rivulet from the forest ground
It flows so gently purling past

We will not stop off at the tavern
But rest ourselves on green, soft mosses
There in the shadow hall of beech trees
We listen to the goldfinch and the greenfinch

The golden wine poured into chalices
We salute and then refresh ourselves
One is caressing his sweetheart so cute
The other carves into the wood his heart

We contemplate about the times to come
If our offspring may enjoy their lives
Beauty donated by nature herself
As well as friendship and true love
