Gyantse (江孜镇 or Gyangzê) is now a small town,
but used to be Tibet’s third largest town after Lhasa and Shigatse. In 2008 the population had been 8,000.
The county has about 60,000 inhabitants of whom 98.5% are Tibetans and only
1.2% Han Chinese.
Gyantse
is still renowned for the Kumbum (chörten) of Palcho monastery and the dzong.
But here I want to introduce the old town.
Gyantse’s
old town has the congeniality of a village. There are cows in the street
ruminating. I hope that it stays this way as with the proliferation of tourists
it might change to streets with McDonald’s, souvenir shops, clothing stores,
and travel agencies.
