At both
visits in Iran I could see dromadaries. A dromedary has one hump on the back
and is the tallest of the three camel species. It is also called the Arabian
camel. I don’t know if there are wild dromedaries as sometimes you don’t see a
herdsman, but I doubt it.
The
dromedary is useful for humans in the desert because of its adaptations in
conserving water and regulating body temperature. The padded hooves are good
for distributing the weigh on sand. The eyebrows are bushy and the dromedary
has two rows of eyelashes, which are a good protection against sand and the
glare of the sun. The nostrils may be closed voluntarily; together with an
adapted kidney function water is conserved.
