Mongolia – Agriculture

Agriculture has become a topic in Mongolia during the past years. Who would have thought it in a country famous for livestock breeding. The Statistical Yearbook of Mongolia – 2016 boasts: „483.5 thousand tonnes of grain, 163.5 thousand tonnes of potatoes and 94.4 thousand tonnes of vegetables were harvested.“ [1]

Mongolia only has a very short season for growing corps. Winter is long and permafrost is an issue. Luckily the summer months also carry the most rain.

While driving out of Ulaanbaatar on a paved road I saw huge fields with crops like rapeseed. I thought these might be e reminder of soviet days with agricultural cooperatives or kolkhozes, but it turned out that these were new developments as Mongolia wants to get independent from foreign grain or nutritional oil imports. There ar also greenhouses nowadays, though I only heard about these and didn't visit one.

But when the paved roads frayed out into dirt tracks I didn't see any agriculture anymore.
