清代) mit Namen Yu Yue (俞樾) geschrieben.

The Heat and A Night Mooring near Maple Bridge

It was hot—hot, hot, hot. Temperatures climbed as high as 41°C—at least on my thermometer, which is placed in the shade. I dug out a fan. Looking at it, I found a poem from the Tang Dynasty—a very famous one, in fact—which I had posted here on the blog about five years ago, featuring both the translation and the original text [1]. Then I examined a second fan, and found the same poem on that one too, written by someone else with a brush; these are unique pieces, not prints. The images on them are originals as well. I am posting photos of them here. For this purpose, I took a new photograph of the hanging scroll in my Cologne apartment; the original of this image can be viewed on Wikipedia [2]. The calligraphy was executed by a Qing Dynasty (
The stele stands in the Hanshan Temple (寒山寺) in Suzhou (蘇州). This temple dates back to the Liang Dynasty—specifically, 502–519 AD. The temple's most significant feature is arguably the poem by Zhang Ji, which I am showing here once again. Hanshan (寒山) means "Cold Mountain," but Hanshan is also the name of a historical figure—the Zen monk Hanshan [3]. However, whether he was truly a historical figure from the 7th or 8th century remains open to discussion. I first encountered him during my studies in Taiwan in the 1970s, specifically in a reprint of Gary Snyder’s translation of the Hanshan poems. That translation was also of pivotal influence on the Beat Generation (e.g., Jack Kerouac or Allen Ginsberg). This Hanshan has no direct connection to the temple; it is merely a case of the same name, though it naturally invites associations.

But now, to the poem:
A Night Mooring at Maple Bridge
Zhang Ji
The moon sets, crows cry, and the sky is filled with frost
Drowsily, I gaze at the river and maple trees in the glow of fishing fires
From the Hanshan Temple outside Suzhou
The sound of the midnight bell drifts over to the passenger boat

This is the only poem by him included in the anthology Three Hundred Tang Poems (
Sun Zhu (孫洙), a Qing Dynasty scholar, compiled this collection in 1763. A total of 48 poems by Zhang Ji appear in the massive compilation Complete Tang Poems (全唐詩) from 1705. Like the famous Kangxi Dictionary (康熙字典), this compilation was commissioned by the Kangxi Emperor (康熙帝), who lived from 1654 to 1722.

Not much is known about Zhang Ji (
張繼); his birth year is uncertain—possibly between 712 and 715. He passed the Jinshi (進士) examination in 753 and died in 779 [4]. The poem A Night Mooring at Maple Bridge (楓橋夜泊) is his most famous work.

Petroglyphs and Inscriptions at Jabel Umm Mountain, Saudi Arabia

I would like to report on the rock art in the Ha'il Region (الفنون الصخرية في منطقة حائل), specifically in the area surrounding Jabel Umm Mountain (جبل أم سنمان) near the city of Jubbah (جبة) [1]. I have previously reported on petroglyphs and inscriptions from various countries, such as Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, and Jordan [2]. I am always amazed at how similar these ancient depictions from different times and places are, but this is due to the materials used and the artists' desire for realistic representation.

The petroglyphs and inscriptions at Jabel Umm Mountain were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015. These depictions date back up to 10,000 years. The Neolithic images depict, for example, ibex; later, other wild and domesticated animals were added: equids, lesser kudu, gazelles, ostriches, lions, dogs, camels, cattle, but also plants and hunting scenes with hunters with bows and dogs. People can be seen on mounts (horses and camels). Overall, the depictions also offer insights into the social life of these times, about which we have no linguistic records. There are some inscriptions of later times, but these are more prominent at another site, which I plan to write about later.

NB. Most pictures here are in enhanced mode to make them better visible.

Ecuador – Street Art in Quito

Unfortunately, I only stayed in Quito for a short time on both visits, so I don't have many photos of street art from there. I'm sure I'll find some from other places, but first I want to share the ones I found.

I have two politically motivated pictures.
One was created by a muralist. The text translates as: "Rights are demanded on your feet, never on your knees." That's a saying I completely agree with. Such large murals are usually commissioned. A few months ago I heard an interesting podcast on Estacion Sur in Spanish called "Muralistas en Alemania" [1]. I previously reported on the murals in the suburb of Cologne where I grew up (Köln-Buchforst) [2].
The second wall is covered with slogans, but they are very carefully executed. The translation is: "We should, if we can, wage a war of virtue, trying in every engagement to overcome the enemy with honesty, faith and generosity. / The more liberated a people is, the more enlightened it is."

Then I have two more pictures with a very detailed hummingbird and then two indigenous women. To my chagrin the paint is already peeling off the wall.

There are even more beautiful pictures to admire in Quito. I would try my luck in La Floresta, one of the newer barrios, the next time I'll visit Quito. And then I found a map by Street Art Cities for Quito [3], in which you can sort out some beautiful photos, but more photos would have to be added here; so I'd like to encourage people to share their pictures. But you can already use the map as a guide to where more murals might be.

I will certainly look through my 6000 or so pictures from Ecuador in the near future to see if I can find any street art outside of Quito to share.

Sortland or Blåbyen or Blue City

Sortland is a municipality in the Norwegian north (Nordland) and includes the islands of Langøya and Hinnøya in the Vesterålen archipelago [1]. The municipality has between 10,000 and 11,000 inhabitants. And I want to tell you why it is also called Blåbyen or Blue City.

The idea of a blue city is not new, but it was revolutionary for Sortland. I still remember the old town of Jodhpur in Rajasthan (India), which also has many blue houses [2]. This was probably not the decisive factor in the idea of providing the city of Sortland with blue houses. The project developed from an idea by the artist Bjørn Elvenes [3].

Bjørn Elvenes studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, Poland, in the 1990s. When he returned to Norway, he was of course not yet able to make a living from his art, he was already making unique pieces of furniture - to be honest, one of my brothers still does that - and then he had the idea of turning the city into a work of art. He wanted to make the city a blue city by painting the houses blue and so make an artistical statement. Interestingly, the residents were not at all convinced by this project, because they thought blue was an unnatural, cold and horrible color. But the mayor and the city council were very impressed by the project, probably because they recognized its touristic potential. As is often the case with artists, a dispute arose over rights and who was in charge of the artistic orientation. Bjørn Elvenes probably saw the conversion of his art project into an urban development concept as a kind of profanation of his idea. But the project had already been launched and was being continued by other projects, so that today Sortland appears as Blåbyen.

Bjørn Elvenes has an art gallery in the shopping centre “Skibsgården” [4], which is opposite the Kulturfabrikken [5]. I think that this project has made the town of Sortkand, far up in the north, more colorful and is also an investment in more culture. But culture is what makes life worth living.

Street Art inside the Arctic Circle

Inside the Arctic Circle you have lots of sun hours during summer and lots of darkness during winter. I've seen nice libraries full of light and illumination, also by the books you may read there. And I've found at least a few pieces of street art during my short visit to the north of Norway / Lofoten. Colorful walls, light, and street art may help to cope or even prevent the winter depression due to the lack or better the absence of sunlight. During summer the bright pictures may even attract more views. The first picture has been near a supermarket on the left side. „Ikke glem å pust!“ mean: Don't forget to breathe!“

I'll put more notes underneath the pictures.

Near the Polarmuseet Tromsø -
Roald Amundsen behind a large heap of snow

I guess the artist had been invited

This is uninvited near the art of the upper picture

The next three pictures are from Sortland, which has an art project
called Blåbyen, which means blue city,
and besides this street art you find houses painted blue

This is most probably a door that isn't used anymore,
it is opposite of a kindergarden.

Street Art in Tiblisi, Georgia

While travelling I hvee an open eye for street art. In Tiblisi (Georgia) I've come across some interesting examples. For me street art is a non-commercial form of art in public spaces, which is intented to remain there permanently to communicate with a wider group of people. It is often political and sometimes just funny, but sometimes annoying if it takes a wall that isn't intended for such art or if tags destroy a work of art. If you want to know more on street art in general, please look up the Wikipedia article [1].

There are also internet articles on street art in Tiblisi, which are different to what I am showing here. One is in English “Discovering Tbilisi’s Street Art Scene through Murals and Graffiti” [2] and as the writing of the Tiblisi is different one knows that the article originated in Georgia. There is also an article in German, which I like to recommend highly, lots of interesting pictures arranged with reference to the artists [3]. The Article is about the Street Art und Mural Festival.

I like the Mouse Electric Power Station and the connection to the electric meter boxes. There's also a strong wish to be part the EU; Georgia is part of Europe and has always been. One picture has the Russian "Путин – убийца детей", which means: "Putin is a child killer". I stumbled on a picture of a man and below was the Greek word „Βασανίζομαι“ [Vasanizomai], which means „I'm being tortured“, but relax, most problably picture and text aren't connected. „Βασανίζομαι“ is a song by Klavdia [4], which could lure me into listening to more Greek songs.

Jerewan's Hraparak and Musical fountains

Yerevan is the capital of the Republic of Armenia and in its center is the Republic Square, which is called Hraparak, which is an abbreviation for Hanrapetutjan hraparak (Հանրապետության հրապարակ) [1]. It used to be called Lenin Square during the Soviet era, but before that it was generally just called Maydan (մայդան). Maydan is an interesting word, therefore I just looked it up [2] in which languages it is used. I first saw it in Persian, because we lived in Isfahan right next to the (میدان امام Meidān-e Emām) or Meidan (میدان). In Arabic it is also called (ميدان). In Georgian you have Meidani (მეიდანი) and in Abkhazian Amaidan (Амаидан). Hindi has Maidaan (मैदान). We could certainly find more languages within and outside the Indo-European language family that have a similar word to maydan for square.

The Lenin statue was removed when independence was achieved and now Republic Square is an architectural highlight. In addition, on some evenings there is a concert of classical and modern music for around two hours, accompanied by a fireworks display with water. This may sound paradoxical, but I will explain it later.

In front of the National Gallery there are ponds with fountains. Music from the National Gallery comes from a tape onto the loudspeakers. The Wasserorgel - the German word means literally water organ and I like it better than the English word music fountain - is controlled synchronously with the music and the fountains conjure up various aesthetic shapes [3]. But that would not be fireworks, because the colors would be missing. These are created by illuminating them with lamps that constantly change their colors.

The "water organ" has 2750 fountains, because it was inaugurated in 1968 for the city's 2750th anniversary. But then it was broken for years and was renovated at a cost of 1.4 million euros. It has been in operation again since 2007. And because it is such a beautiful spectacle, it attracts many visitors every time.

Public Art in the Republic Užupis (Vilnius, Lithuania)

Shortly before I left for my trip to the Baltic States, I reported on “Kunst im Fluß 2023” in Gemünd [1]. Kunst im Fluß has two meanings in German, on the one hand art in the river but also art in progress, in flow [2]. The banks, especially when they are fortified in cities, are suitable for presenting art. In the area where I live (Eifel), this has been going on for years (confluence of Urft and Olef, two smaller rivers).

So I was not surprised when I discovered a similar public exhibition at the Vilnia River in Užupis (Vilnius, Lithuania) [3]. This is also the place where you would expect to find such public art, because the suburb of Užupis sees itself as “The Independent Republic of Artists“. You can look at pictures on the bank there and also watch the swing under the bridge.

An Inquiry into the Color White / Eine Untersuchung zur Farbe Weiß / Una investigación sobre el color blanco

Scroll down until you can read again.

You are probably wondering why I am writing about the color white. Well, at first you can't read anything, because I'm going to publish the text white on white. You first have to make the text legible. And that is a task that almost always has to be mastered: making a text legible. A medieval text contains many ligatures, a handwritten text has special features, a text by Arno Schmidt or James Joyce can evade immediate decipherment, and so on. Modern technology makes it possible to hide texts without deleting them. So they are easier to read than the text that is hidden under a palipsest or the oil painting over which another has been painted.

Maybe I'm writing about the color white - white on white, because I saw a white on white tattoo [1].

Fog and frost
Up in the mountains
White on white

On the other hand, I am currently reading about the exhibition "Terence Koh: 1980-2008 Love for Eternity" because I like to read texts in Castellano / Spanish, especially when I also have an English translation (or vice versa in this case) so that I can compare which text I like better. White has been the leading feature of this exhibition.

Or it is the old SF film "THX 1138" [3]. Robert Duvall plays THX 1138, some scenes are set against a white background, almost everything is white. White as the color of loneliness. The white in which one cannot hide. And the guards appear as figures dressed in black. Contrasts also work better on black and white pictures, which is why I also used monochromatic photography.

Water cascades
Running over black basalt
The eagles circle

I have to admit that for me blackness and darkness have more appeal. So I like better Prof Abdul Nachtigaller [4] than Snow White.

Black Paradox

What could become
Of these dark days
Which pass by so sluggishly
Overcast
Drizzle
Tree stumps in black mirrors
And the colorful paintings of the children
Appear only black

Then why brings
Paint it black
So much sunshine?

Black rather expresses abundance, is impenetrable, dense and warm. We associate black with grief and depression. But you can hide yourself well in black, which is why it is also a color of hope.

White expresses emptiness. White noise is uncomfortable. White can be cold, repellent, sterile. However, the peace flag and peace dove are white. The bride's dress is also white [5].

Schwarzes Paradox

Was könnte werden
Aus diesen dunklen Tagen
Die so träge vorübergehen
Bedeckt
Nieselregen
Baumstümpfe in schwarzen Spiegeln
Und die bunten Bilder der Kinder
Erscheinen nur schwarz

Warum bringt dann
Paint it black
So viel Sonnenschein?

Paradoja negra

Que podria llegar a ser
De estos dias oscuros
Que avanzan tan lentamente
Nublado
Llovizna
Tocones de árboles en espejos negros
Y las coloridas pinturas de los niños
Aparecen solo negros

Entonces, ¿por qué trae
Paint it black
Tanto sol?
