Tweetup at EULAR Annual Meeting 2015 in Rome

Also this year we had a tweetup at the EULAR Annual Meeting on Thursday 12:00 hr. The EULAR Press Office had given us a room (Hall 6 – Puccini Room) to meet. I’d like to thank Mrs Emma Reynolds from the Eular Press Office, who made this possible. This time we’ve been only a small number, but we had an hour of interesting discussion and took some lunch at the same time.

Here’s a picture or the people at the Tweetup:

Copyright
We talked about copyright. It seems to be hindering discussions. Lots of poster presenters used the green symbol to allow pictures, which has been a step into the right direction.
But during the sessions taking pictures was prohibited and enforced. The EULAR Press Office commented on this: "... enforcing the ‘no picture taking or recording’ rule is to protect the copyright of the data being presented at the congress because the copyright does not belong to EULAR but to the author. EULAR doesn’t have the authority to allow the recording of content and our only objective in upholding the rule is to protect the copyright of the data being presented at the congress." It is understandable that a no exception rule is easier to maintain, especially at a conference of such a proportion.
I’ll comment in another blog post on this later as there might be other forms of protecting the author's rights and encourage discussion of what he/she presented.

EULAR and social media
The EULAR Press Office is twittering and was and is very active before, during an after the meeting.
But EULAR somehow hasn’t noticed that social is a challenge and could be used to promote the goal Prof. Cutulo had outlined in the visions of EULAR in his opening speech.
The ACR is much more into social media.
We’ve seen that on pharmaceutical firm had a board showing twitterers (all known to us personally or at least from the exchange on twitter). But let’s not leave twitter and social media in the hands of the pharmaceutical industry.
I’ll also take this up again later in a blog post.

How long it takes to become a rheumatologist
We compared the differences around the world on how to become a rheumatologist.

Over hours
I guess it doesn’t surprise anyone, that worldwide medicine and care in rheumatology depends on over hours.

To sum it up
Thanks everyone for participating. I hope to see you gain. Maybe we should meet at the next EULAR with a (short) agenda on what we want to accomplish on twitter as rheumatologists.

Tweetup at the ACR 2012 Meeting in Washington D.C.

Another annual meeting of the ACR and another Tweetup.
This has been the 3rd tweetup at an international meeting on rheumatology and so it isn't routine, yet. We've met in Chicago 2011, some also in Atlanta 2010, and some in Berlin at the EULAR 2012. We satrted in Atlanta with 3 people, 10 in Chicago, 8 in Berlin, and more than 16 in Washington. Next year or in 2014 we might need a ballroom to meet. :-)) Let me thank Brian Reid for looking and booking the location.

Who has been at this year's ACR tweetup (hashtag #ACR2012 and to some extent #ACR12)? A list of participants you will find at the end of this text. Tweetup means bringeing together people in real life, who otherwise exchange ideas on the internet, to be specific on Twitter. You will find all kinds of people, who are connected on twitter to discuss rheumatic diseases, and you will find them all in the list of twitterers: patients, rheumatologists, epidemiologists, press people, patient organizations, representatives ...
What did we discuss? We discussed quite an array of topics, but more important has been bringing all these people together and seeing each other in real life. So, discussion included introductions, different needs of information on rheumatology on the net and how to meet these needs, connectivity and the role of social media, twitter and rheumatology (#rheum), patients and doctors (interactions, what patients tell and what they fear to tell), side effects of new and old drugs, the problems and frustrations of "nothing works", improvements, new concepts, etc. (I could take part in all conversations).
Thanks all for coming. I hope that we meet again at another tweetup, either at thr next EULAR meeting in Madrids 2013 (#EULAR13) or the ACR meeting in San Diego (#ACR13). But let's stay connected on Twitter!

Tweetup EULAR 2012

Here is, what we have planned:

We have a social meeting at:
Gugelhof, 37 Knaackstrasse, 10435 Berlin
Wednesday 19:00 / 7 pm /
Link to the map: https://maps.google.de/maps?q=Gugelhof,+Knaackstra%C3%9Fe,+Berlin&hl=de&ie=UTF8&sll=50.488025,6.535442&sspn=0.017338,0.034847&oq=gugelho&t=h&hq=Gugelhof,+Knaackstra%C3%9Fe,+Berlin&z=15
If traffic is congested or you don't like taking a taxi/cab, the Berlin underground system is a good alternative, take line U2 to station Senefelder Platz, Gugelhof is about 150 m away.

And we have a scientific meeting at:
2nd floor between halls 3 (EULAR village) and 4 (Exhibition / Posters), where it's marked a on the map
Thursday 12:00-13:00

This is, how it developped:

There are a few problems, which I believe shouldn't be too difficult to solve. I'll update the text with suggestions, you'll be surprised about the colour coding. And the new summary at the end![5]

1. Date and time
One suggestion has been Wednesday, which has the charm of being the opening day, but also includes the risk that some people arrive too late to show up. Remember, the new airport of Berlin (BER) should have been operational from June the 1st, but the opening of the new airport has been postponed, so there might be some changes in your schedule. Most probably you'll reach Berlin via the old airports at Tegel (TXL) or Schönefeld (SXF) -: have a look at the press release: http://preview.berlin-airport.de/en/press/press-releases/2012/2012-05-08-safety-is-number-one-priority/index.php
One option would be late Wednesday, say 17:00 in the afternoon. @RonanTKavanagh suggested Wednesday PM; afternoon or evening, before or after Erdheim-Chester Disease. [1] Another time could be 09:45 in the morning on Thursday, that would be after the Satellite Symposia.  @zandbelt suggests some timepoint on the Thursday or Friday afternoon at some spot IN the exhibition halls would suit, then we all have 24h to find out where the best coffee specialities are being served and DO need it after morning sessions.[2]
Considering all said, it seems that Wednesday 17:00 more or less would be a good choice; early in the meeting, but enough time to reach Berlin. [3]
I venture for Ronan's new idea, let's meet in the evening 19:00 / 7 pm. We could still meet at the EULAR congress center later during the meeting. [4]
I propose the more medical meeting for Thursday noon. [5] I think we should call it scientific meeting. [10]
The Scientific Sessions end at 11:45, 11:45-13:30 is deemed for Poster Viewing and Lunch, so I think the best time for the tweetup meeting is: 12:00-13:00. This leaves enough time to reach the meeting and to go afterwards to where ever we want. [7]

2. Place
There should be ample room and it shouldn't be too complicated, meaning easy access for the ones who aren't looking for training opportunities to master the 5K Run.
Any suggestions? Here's the link to the map of the Congress Center: http://www.interactive-plans.com/clients/EULAR%202012/EULAR%202012%20Overview%20plan.pdf
I suggest on the 2nd floor between halls 3 (EULAR village) and 4 (Exhibition / Posters), where it's marked a on the map.
Let's meet at: Gugelhof, 37 Knaackstrasse, 10435 Berlin, wonderful German grub. Hearty, meaty. Alsatian, really, so almost French. I will check the location and give further details. At least I have been to Knaackstraße before. / Other suggestions for a meeting place at the Congress Center still hold, if someone doesn't or can't join us there. [4]
My cousin doesn't know Gugelhof. People writing about the restaurant are more in favour of the place (ambiente and food). Here's the link for the home page: http://gugelhof.de/pages/pages_e/index_e.html
I'm checking for vegetarian alternatives. [5]
If traffic is congested or cabs don't come, when you need one, the Berlin underground system is a good alternative, take line U2 to stop Senefelder Platz (and sing "One" by U2 if you like), Gugelhof is about 150 m away. [6]
Here's the link to the map: https://maps.google.de/maps?q=Gugelhof,+Knaackstra%C3%9Fe,+Berlin&hl=de&ie=UTF8&sll=50.488025,6.535442&sspn=0.017338,0.034847&oq=gugelho&t=h&hq=Gugelhof,+Knaackstra%C3%9Fe,+Berlin&z=15 [8]
Ronan has made reservations for a table of 10 people. Thanks, Ronan! [9]

3. Participants
Who's coming: Please complete the list by tweet or comment:
@_connectedcare @doctorakerkar @Larhumato @rajsengupta @rheuma_suffolk @Rheumatologe @rheumi_ @RonanTKavanagh @zandbelt (is someone on this list, who doesn't come?)
Who isn't on the list, doesn't matter if it's Wednesday evening or Thursday noon. [9]

4. Miscellanea
I've been in contact with EULAR Press Office (@EULAR_Press), they use #EULAR2012, but I think we should stick to own own hashtag #EULAR12 or use both if tweets aren't too long. EULAR home page: http://www.eular.org/congress_home.cfm

5. Summary
