The Hui in Lhasa

There’s also a Hui (回族) community in Lhasa. What are the Hui? The Hui are Muslims. They count as an ethnic group, but actually it’s a religious group of Han Chinese following the Muslim faith. There are other Muslims, too, like the Uighurs. The Hui are more than 10 million individuals in the north-western provinces like Ningxia, Gansu and Qinghai, the last bordering with Tibet. Most men wear white caps or hats and women usually wear headscarves. Interestingly the Dungan people of Kyrgyzstan are also considered part of the Hui ethnicity. There’s also a mosque at Lhasa.

No – not Lhasa,
that’s the Dungan Mosque in Karakol, Kyrgyzstan
