On
several occasions I had to good luck to see the wild ass of Tibet, which is
called kiang. The scientific name is Equus kiang, which indicates that it is a
distinct species. The kiang has never been domesticated.
Interestingly
we saw these animals alone or in very small groups near the roads. Somehow they
have adapted to cars and humans, though they flee if you try to get near them.
They are of course herbivores. They can be interbred with other equidae, but the
offspring is sterile like the mule.
Somewhere they got into and out of a fence, I think somewhere higher up in the mountains
