In Tabriz
I’ve seen a shop with flags. As I’ve made some photographs, I realized that this
shop also sold the paraphernalia for the month of Muharram. Muharram (محرم) is the first month of the Islamic calendar and one of the holy
months, second only to Ramadan.
An expression
of grief is the beating of the chest. Another form is flagellation as a
symbolic act of the blood-shedding of Hosein Ibn Ali. One form of flagellation
is striking the back with chains. Such chains are seen in the display of this
shop. Public flagellation, however, is forbidden in Iran. One might see such
things at Karbala. Maybe one buys such chains as to remember the past.
