The city of
Puerto Varas might not be well known, but has been the epicenter of the
entertaining art and culture in the South of Chile. The celebration of the Carnaval
del Sur brings local heritage to family,
children, and youth of the south of the Los Lagos Region. The Carnaval del Sur
Foundation and Carnaval del Sur Cultural Group have implemented free workshops to
develop talents in disciplines such as theater and dance.
Puerto Varas
is situated at Lago Llanquihue with magnificent vistas of the lake and the volcanoes
such as Osorno and Calbuco, which had erupted in 2015. I had been travelling
around the lake and returned in the late afternoon to be able to look at the fiesta
de color y alegría.
The writer
Bernardita Hurtado Low of Palena, Regional Prize of Art and Culture 2017, did
the storytelling of Patagonia "The animals of our forests". Teacher
and children's composer Hilda Cristy de Osorno
performed "The Musical Juguera". Of course Carolina
Cruz Correa, director of the Carnival of the South, participated during these
two days of events. "Carnaval del Sur re-enchant the family with culture
through masks and performing arts. We connect our local history with each of
the children and youth who participate in this event. All activities are free
and prepared with great care and dedication, " she told Cybertour.
Refreshing
for me – a local activity, which wasn’t dominated by tourism. A fiesta for the
local people. I had been the only tourist around.
