While
in Sakti to visit Takthok
Gompa
[1], I
had the opportunity to visit Manjushree
Lamdon School, which had been
started by Lama Urgyen from Takthok monastery with German support.
The school had been designed by a Canadian architect. The German
support comes mainly from a booster club, behind which is Jutta
Mattausch, who has written a travel guide in German, out of which I
already have quoted [2].
Mr. Dhondup Tashi,
the principal
From
humble beginnings Manjushree
Lamdon School
developed into a renowed place of education. In 2019 taught 171 girls
and boys from all over the area around Sakti. Starting with a
two-year Montessori pre-school up to grade 8, the school competes now
at the same level of education as the best schools in the region [3].
Only
a minority of Ladakhi children can read or write their mother tongue
well. Manjushri Lamdon
School
designed and printed two textbooks in Ladakhi concerning social and
local studies for first graders.
Goals of the school:
* Good schooling for all children, regardless of their parents' financial resources
* Maintaining the 2,000 year old Ladakhi culture
* Preparation for traditional as well as modern ways of life through lessons in Ladakhi and English
* Promotion of Buddhist philosophy and Ladakhi cultural assets in addition to the usual subjects
Tibetan script / Ladakhi or
Bhoti as the language is known there
